Ground work and throws

Our karate club now has a full set of mats so that we can cover the whole dojo. These were donated by Sensei Steve Wilkinson, John Ward and Paul Young (Who runs the Tai Chi class with Steve). Throws and ground work are an essential part of karate and need to be practised regularly to ensure that they become part of a fully rounded karatekas skill set.

Within the kata we practice and our kihon drills there are throws and take downs, but to practice them just in this way without practical application means they become worthless. Ground work on the other hand is what karateka need when things go wrong. A karateka should aim to stay on his feet where possible. This is where our strength lies. But sometimes we could end up on the floor. Not a good place to be as this is a very vulnerable position to both injury from the hard surface of the ground, the aggressors associates and obviously the aggressor themselves. We therefore need to be if not experts in the ground game, proficient enough to  at least get out of it. The same principles apply on the ground as stood up i.e Connection, keeping relaxed, sensitivity, balance and finding the empty space.

New Management Committee established.

As part of the club restructure a management committee has also been established with the following quorum:-

Chair and Chief Instructor - Sensei Steve Wilkinson, Yondan (4th Dan).

Vice Chair - Sensei Martyn Butterfield.

Secretary and Child Protection Officer - Sensei Andy Bailey, Yondan (4th Dan).

Treasurer - Sensei Linda Croakin, Shodan (1st Dan).

New Chief Instructor

Sensei Steve Wilkinson is the new Chief Instructor for the club. He has over 40 years martial arts experience and is a Yondan (4th Dan) black belt in Anshin Ryu. Sensei Wilkinson also has experience in Judo as well as being a practitioner of Tai Chi Chuan for over 8 years, which influences his karate.

Xmas Party and Grading 2010

Congratulations to Louiee and Gareth for passing their gradings on Tuesday. You both trained hard and deserved it.

Wayne Otto Kumite Course - 25th September 2010

Myself and Sensei Shaun Arrowsmith attended a 4 and a half hour course with Sensei Wayne Otto, 9 times gold medalist at the WUKO workd Karate Championships. Although I am still aching from the day, it was extremely enjoyable and informative. Some very practical kumite techniques were demonstrated by Wayne.
The first part of the afternoon was based around getting your opponant to throw a gyaku-zuki punch, the blocking and countering. The second part was around using the sweep, which included his signature move where a feint mi geri is thrown, whilts keeping the body covered, then dropping the foot done behind the opponents front foot, punching reverse punch, then sweeping and following up with another gyaku-zuki, when the opponent drops to the floor.

The course was only £20 for the 4 and a half hours and very good value for money. My thanks to Sensei Wayne Otto for his time and answering my numerous questions on the day.

Increase in Club Subs.

There has been a need to increase the club subs as from this Tuesday. Adults will be £2.50 and children (Under 16's) will be £2. This decision has been taken to ensure the continuation of the club. Dave has been running the club at a loss for some time now and obviously we cannot expect this to continue. I hope everyone understands the need to do this. It is still extremely good value as most clubs charge around £4 to £5 per session.
